Philippe Roux, its Holder, is the latest researcher to have joined the IRIC

Since it is usually done, the official news of the creation of this chair was released some weeks after its actual creation. The agreed date was December 7th, 2006, during a ceremony at the University of Ottawa with Mr Maxime Bernier, Minister of Industry. On the occasion Mr Bernier underlined that "this investment allows our universities to develop an expertise and produce ground-breaking ideas that will contribute to our economic growth and job creation for the future".
"I am honoured to be given this Chair, it allows me to really settle in Canada and to give a fast track to my research programs" said Philippe Roux.
Principal Investigator at the IRIC, in charge of the Cell Signaling and Proteomics Research Unit, Dr Roux has just started his scientific activities for the institute in September, 2006. Simultaneously Professor at the University of Montreal, Department of Pathology and Cell Biology, he previously led his research at the well-known Department of Cell Biology of Pr John Blenis, Harvard Medical School, for four years.
It is to be remembered that the main goal of Dr Roux's laboratory is to understand the regulation of RSK activity by oncogenes and mitogens, and to elucidate the biological significance of these proteins with regards to cellular growth control. The experimental approaches include a combination of mouse genetics, molecular and cellular biological methods. Since its creation the lab has welcomed Louis-André Julien, MSc., Huanhuan Gao, Research professional and from January 2007, Audrey Carriere-Pazat, post-doc.
The fast establishment of a Canada Research Chair confirm the great value of his young scientific career. It also confirms the outstanding performance of the IRIC within the research world. Hardly two years after its official scientific opening, the institute was given a record number of research chairs and 100% of its applications for funding were honoured. Its scientific productivity, already well launched, is conforted by the recent financing obtained from the Canadian Foundation for Innovation fund (18.7 M$). Which will boost even further its development (recruiting, teaching and researching), with the prospect of creating twelve more research teams by 2010.
On the whole, the University of Montreal was given six new Canada Research Chairs, including Pharmacogenomics (Michael S. Phillips), Statistic Medical Imaging (Jonathan E. Taylor) and Stem Cells Neurobiology (Karl Fernandes).
