Research topic and relevance
Michael Tyers is an expert on the biology of cell growth and division, and a leader in the field of systems biology. This new discipline aims to describe and model all components of complex biological processes. It is now apparent that genes and the proteins they encode form highly interconnected adaptive networks that sense and respond to many signals. Recent technological advances that have emanated from genome sequences now allow system-wide descriptions of the myriad interactions of genes and proteins, and the modifications that control these interactions. His systems and synthetic biology research program will enable new approaches in biomedicine and drug discovery.
