After earning a Ph. D. in Biochemistry at the University of Cambridge in 1993, Alain Verreault carried out postdoctoral training at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York. He was recruited by the Imperial Cancer Research UK Fund in 1999 (now known as Cancer Research UK), where he headed a research team for seven years.

He joined IRIC in November of 2005, as Principal Investigator in the Chromosome Biogenesis Research Unit. Professor in the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology of the Faculty of Medicine of the Université de Montréal, Alain Verreault also holds a Canada Research Chair in Nucleosome Assembly and Genome Integrity.
