Marc Therrien’s team wins the 2025 Discovery of the Year Award - Québec Science

Published on April 8, 2026

The team led by Marc Therrien, Principal Investigator and Chief Executive Officer at IRIC, has won Québec Science magazine’s 2025 Discovery of the Year award for its work on the BRAF protein and its role in the spread of cancer cells. The winner was chosen by the public, with more than 2,000 people participating in the vote.

“Our discovery regarding BRAF mutations paves the way for new drugs capable of neutralizing them and slowing the progression of cancer,” explains Marc Therrien. “I am extremely proud of the tremendous work accomplished by my team and our collaborators. It could truly make a difference for a significant proportion of people with cancers whose progression depends on BRAF.” The fact that the public has named this study Discovery of the Year is an exceptional recognition of the work of Hugo Lavoie, Ting Jin, Driss Lajoie, as well as all our colleagues at IRIC and the other research centers involved. This support, which is both valuable and deeply motivating, encourages us to continue our research efforts.”

This is a source of great pride for IRIC and Université de Montréal communities. Congratulations to Marc Therrien’s team on this well-deserved honor!
