Guy Sauvageau Honored by the Stem Cell Network
Published on May 15, 2026
Professor Guy Sauvageau, director of the Molecular Genetics of Stem Cells Research Unit, has been awarded the Stem Cell Network’s Trailblazer Award. This award recognizes individuals who have overcome major challenges in the field of regenerative medicine and developed solutions that advance care, policy, commercialization, or innovation within a system.
Professor Sauvageau is receiving this award for his groundbreaking work on hematopoietic stem cells. Notably, he and Professor Anne Marinier co-discovered the molecule UM171, which was initially used to expand cord blood stem cells prior to transplantation in more than 120 patients. The molecule will soon enter Phase 3 clinical trials, which could allow its use to be extended to more people.
The Stem Cell Network is a Canadian non-profit organization that supports four main objectives related to stem cells and regenerative medicine: funding, training, knowledge translation, and commercialization of innovations.
Congratulations to Professor Sauvageau!
